2017 Working with Wood - George

Directions and MAP

The Working with Wood Show Moves to George this Year
22 to 25th SEPTEMBER 2017
VENUE GEORGE CAMPUS
Madiba Drive, George

Four years since the first Working with Wood Show hosted in Knysna during 2014, the strong feeling and urge to reawaken the skill of carpentry within, not only South Africa but especially the Garden Route resulted in the second George Working with Wood Show.

“We are thrilled to announce that we will once again host a Working with Wood Show in association with the Association of Woodturners of South Africa (AWSA), the School of Natural Resource Management at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and the George Woodworking Association from noon on 22 until 18:00 on 25 September,” said Regional Sales Manager, Vermont Sales (Sponsors), Daniel Melin.

The beautiful NMU George Campus will once again serve as the hub of the festivities with displays, lectures, tool and project demonstrations, food stalls and entertainment for both adults and children. Early festival participants will receive a Working with Wood Show goody bag filled with wood related surprises.

“We are hoping that carpentry will not follow the same sad path that the traditional Khoi and San practices of plant use in the botanically rich Cape region of South Africa did. The use of these plant are poorly documented and are rapidly diminishing because of the fragility of orally transferred indigenous knowledge, and the fact that modern medicine has almost completely replaced the traditional health care system.

“Now that carpentry is no longer offered as a subject at school, our industry fears that in the future, communities will speak of a long lost skill. Because of this, we feel it is of vital importance to reawaken the interest of carpentry amongst the youth,” said Melin.

Several wood merchants will join in the celebration of wood and timber and display their special goods throughout the show. Organisers remain mindful to include a variety of products, as long as they include wood.

AWSA joins the Working with Wood Show for their annual symposium that once again features numerous renowned South African demonstrators who will share their skills and insights. “This year our Symposium, themed Recovering From Failure will also be hosting overseas demonstrator, Al Stirt, who will join our local turners in showing participants their skill in Recovering from Failure,” said Deirdré Marcus, AWSA Symposium coordinator.

The symposium runs concurrently with the Working with Wood Show, allowing the participants free access to the Working with Wood Show and trade exhibition of machinery, tools, supplies and turning stock, as well as an exhibition of beautifully turned artwork.

The Working with Wood Show and Woodturners Symposium closes off a busy September, recognised as Arbor month.

This year the George Woodworkers association are joining the Show, allowing them to demonstrate their unique turning, carpentry and carving skills throughout the 4 day show.

Should wood crafters and merchants wish to exhibit their skills and goods during this show they may contact Show Coordinator, Fran Kirsten on fran@out-there.co.za.

“Garden Route residents will be well advised to diarise the dates (22-25 September) as not to miss out on the opportunity to witness the Garden Route timber industry coming alive,” concluded Melin.
